Mohill GAA Notes
Down Memory Lane
This week’s trip down Memory Lane again takes us back in time to 1962. In last week’s notes we recalled an underage match from that particular year, while this week we recall a senior league encounter in which Mohill lost to Ballinamore on a 3-4 to 0-4 scoreline in Ballinamore. The Home side played with the aid of a strong wind in the opening half, and lead at the interval by 2-2 to 0-0. Our best players on the day were Sean McManus, Christy McCaffrey, Noel Carey, John (Poocher) Gordon, Brian Rowley, Paul Doris, Paddy Haughney. The lineout was as follows... Sean Bannon, George Booth, Sean McManus, Paddy Haughney, John Donnelly, Brian Rowley, Paul Doris, Brendan Doyle, Christy McCaffrey, Desmond Wynne, Noel Carey, Peter Gordon, Phillip O’Malley, John Gordon, Tommy Gilmartin. Marksmen were N.Carey 0-2, P Doris 0-1, S McManus 0-1 (Penalty). Best for the winners were Thomas Galligan, Paddy Dolan, Columbo Cryan, Tommy (Spike) McCormack, Phillip Roddy, Seamus Wrynne, (some of the all-time greats of the Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s GAA Club.
Under-18 League
Our Under-18 team St. Manchan’s picked up their first brace of points in this year's League at the second time of asking when on Tuesday evening of last week they travelled to Drumkeerin, and defeated the Home side by four points on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-11, having lead at the interval by seven points. At this point, we would like to wish Blaine Mc Crann a speedy recovery from an ankle injury picked up during the course of the contest. Our lineout was as follows... Codey Tighe, Cillian Walpole, Sam Bohan, Ryan Gordon, Tomàs Mayock, Shane Mayock, Evan Kilrane, Keith McCaffrey, Kevin McNamara, Frankie McManus, Blaine McCrann, John Macklin, Daniel Beirne. Subs used were Eoghan McNamara, David Murphy, Rian Walpole, Eoin Reilly.
Under-15 League Div 1
Mixed fortunes for our under-15 charges last week when on the Monday evening they travelled to Aughanasheelin, and defeated the Home side St. Bridget’s on a 7-11 to 1-4 scoreline, while on Thursday evening at a chilly Philly Mc Guinness Memorial Park they lost out to Fenagh on a 9-11 to 3-8 scoreline after what could be described as a game of two halves. Our boys performed very well in the opening half, and only trailed by the bare minimum at the interval on the scoreline that read 4-4 to 3-6, with a goal just prior to the half time whistle propelling the visitors into the lead, that they never subsequently relinquished. Interestingly, Fenagh Senior team conceded 9-11 against our Seniors a few weeks back, so as they say, what comes around goes around. John Mee played a fine game at Centre-field all through, while his Midfield partner Ryan Sheehan also had his moments, with the likes of Kevin Gallogly, Nathan O’Donnell, Kayden McKeon, Conal Walpole, Conor Reynolds, Tom McManus impressing in the opening half. Our lineout was as follows... Michael Macklin (who could not be faulted despite the scoreline), Kayden McKeon, Liam Reilly, Conal Walpole, Diarmuid Higgins, John Mitchell John Mee, Ryan Sheehan, Tom McManus, Kevin Gallogly Jack Gilheaney, Conor Reynolds, Nathan O’ Donnell. Subs. used were Jake Farren, Tadhg Wynne, Callum Kilcrann. Marksmen were C Reynolds 2-0, K. Gallogly 0-5, J. Gilheaney 1-0, J. Mee 0-1, R. Sheehan 0-1,N. O’Donnell 0-1.

Tickets will cost €50, and will be based on the UK Lottery. The winner will be the bonus ball number in the main Saturday Lotto draw. The draw will take place after the last ticket has been sold. Contact James on 0861369830.
50/50 Draw
Congratulations to Kieran Finnerty who became the latest lucky local winner in our 50/50 draw when bar lady Leah pulled his ticket out of our draw drum in the Green Rooster (Cusacks) on Friday night last. Kieran who won a pot containing €2,600 was a good Gaelic football player in his younger days in Roscommon and London, but has been resident in Mohill for many years now. Don't put it all on the Rossies to win Sam Kieran. Thanks to Julie and John Earley for hosting the draw, and to all who entered. Our next draw is in Gordon’s cosy corner on Friday next May 03rd.
Reserve League
Our 02nd team travelled to Carrigallen on Saturday evening last where they defeated the Home side by three points on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9 having also had a three-point lead at the interval 0-8 to 0-5. Wayward shooting, and to use a modern day parlance, poor shot selection meant that while we lead throughout the contest there was never more than a few points separating the two sides. While we were deserving winners we did leave the door open for a late smash and grab raid by the losers which thankfully did not materialise. Erratic shooting aside this was a good team effort by our boys who lined out minus a few key players. In truth, we should have been out the gate at half time as while we kicked a sizeable amount of wides and hit a few balls into the grateful hands of the Home keeper the losers were far more economical in their shooting scoring five from six attempts (four from frees) on the resumption. Both the two sides scored 1-4 a piece as our wides tally mounted up, while we also wasted a couple of great goal scoring opportunities. Fine displays were turned in by the likes of Cillian Walpole, Matthew Murphy, Adam Mc Guinness, Tadhg Mulligan, Jack Rowley. Our lineout was as follows... Peter O’Neill, Daniel Scott, Adam McGuinness, Tomàs Mayock, Evan Kilrane, Johnny Boyle, Cillian Walpole, Oscar Reynolds, Tadhg Mulligan, Donal Duignan, Jamie Cosgrove, Jack Rowley, Matthew Murphy, Fiachra McGuinness, Harry Boyle. Subs. used Keith McCaffrey. Marksman were M. Murphy 0-7, F. Mc Guinness 1-2, J. Rowley 0-1,J cosgrove 0-1, K McCaffrey 0-1. Footnote
Interestingly, the above lineout contained no fewer than nine teenagers namely Adam McGuinness, Tomàs Mayock, Evan Kilrane, Cillian Walpole, Oscar Reynolds, Jack Rowley, Matthew Murphy, Harry Boyle, Keith McCaffrey, while Donal Duignan and Daniel Scott are just a year or two older.
Course
Matt Gaffey will be running a safeguarding course in the Clubhouse next Friday evening at 7pm for any Club members who either wishes, or needs to particiate. GAA rules state that anyone dealing with players under 16 must have this course done. James Mitchell is sending out a link for attendees to register online.
Philly Mc Guinness
The Club were proud and honoured to host the Philly McGuinness Cup final between Leitrim and Mayo on Saturday last at our Club grounds named in the late great Philly's honour. Unfortunately, the Home team were forced to play second violin to the visitors on a day when the sun shone brightly, and the dreaded April showers stayed away. At this point, we would like to thank all our Club volunteers who put their shoulders to the wheel at the weekend. After the game Johnny Mc Guinness, brother of Phillys presented the cup to the winning Mayo Captain Sean Morahan who in turn gave a very nice acceptance speech in the pleasant evening sunshine.
Scòr
Our best wishes go to our Figure dancers who will proudly represent Club, County, and Province at the All Ireland scòr finals in killarney. Our dancing Queens are Roìsìn Kennedy, Amy Cosgrove, Hannah Gaffey, Layla Murphy, Laura O’Neill, Alanah McCrann, Ciara Mc Crann, Ceadigh Heslin. On this occasion we will refrain from saying “break a leg” girls.
County Minor
Our County Minor team under-17’s suffered their second defeat in this year’s Connacht Championship when going down to Roscommon in Ballinamore on Friday evening last. The club are represented on the panel by Ryan Gordon and Frankie McManus, while of course the team is managed by Karl Foley, son of Mohill native Chris Foley, a former Club player, Officer, and a member of our famed 1971 Championship winning team.
